The show, conducted over the bay, was so well received that Voris was later sent a commendation letter, dated 24 June 1946, by his old battle commander from Hornet, Jocko Clark. Clark by then was chief of naval air basic training at Corpus Christi and had witnessed the show along with Nimitz. “The performance of yourself and pilots under your command,” he wrote, “was outstanding. The skill and pilot technique displayed in performing precision acrobatic maneuvers in close order formation at terrific speed was breathtaking…. The demonstration of combat fighter tactics in shooting down the simulated ‘Jap Zero’ was cleverly conceived and exceptionally well executed. Your entire performance demonstrated naval piloting at its best.”

Nimitz, too, was impressed. Butch says the CNO went away agreeing with an earlier, June 17, recommendation by Captain William E. “Bill” Gentner Jr., head of training at NAS Jacksonville, that the team should switch to the navy’s newest and latest fighter plane, the Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat. Gentner’s message to the CNO, kept by Taddeo, said in part:

TEAM IS AN OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION FOR PUBLIC INFORMATION ON NAVAL AVIATION X ORIGINATOR FEELS THAT IN THE INTEREST OF THE NAVY AND PUBLIC APPEAL THE SUBJECT TEAM SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH F8F AIRCRAFT.
